If you’re ready to dive right into the holiday season, the latest track from Niagara singer-songwriter Kathryn Sinopoli is here for you. We caught up with Kathryn to chat about her new song, musical influences, & dream collaborations.

From The Strait: Tell us about your new single – what made you want to record a holiday song?

Kathryn Sinopoli: Christmas is my favourite time of year. It always feels magical and has a way of bringing hope to people when they are in dark places. This song specifically felt necessary because of COVID19 and closed borders, or people being nervous about visiting family. Hopefully when people hear this holiday song, they are reminded of the special time they have with their loved ones, near or far.

FTS: How did you get started as a musician?

Kathryn Sinopoli: I definitely grew up in a non-musical family, but I loved singing from an early age. It was in my pre-teen years that I started experimenting with songwriting. Garageband was my first deep dive into recording myself in my bedroom and trying out loops and instrumentation.

FTS: Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

Kathryn Sinopoli: I am proud to admit that Taylor Swift is a huge musical influence for me. You can hear it in my writing style and I’ve been told we have similar voices. Taylor has accomplished huge things in the music industry, and being a female, she is crushing records in a male dominated industry. As well, Avril Lavigne and Shania Twain were two women I listened to a lot growing up and have made me proud to be a Canadian songwriter and artist.

FTS: You’ve mentioned wanting to write more songs for other artists. As a songwriter, who would be your dream collaborators?

Kathryn Sinopoli: Dream collaborators: Taylor Swift, Ryan Tedder, Stephan Moccio and Adam Levine

FTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music?

Kathryn Sinopoli: More than anything, my music is all about making you feel things you don’t want to feel but that you know you should. It’s a pop sound with country crossover (sometimes), infectious melodies and memorable toplines to keep you coming back for more. Or in simpler terms, think of your favourite cheat meal, that’s my music for your ears.
