Though constantly touring, Niagara’s favourite jam band has taken the time to record some brand new tunes. The guys in Road Waves have recently dropped their latest single and accompanying video for “Hindsight”, and are heading out on their 2020 Foresight tour. We had a chat with the band to find out more about the song, their influences, and what’s next.

From The Strait: Tell us about your new single, “Hindsight”. What was the inspiration for it, and how did it all come together?

Road Waves: Musically the inspiration came from learning the “Rejuvenation” album by The Meters for Halloween. Got me thinking very funky and momentous. Lyrically the song is about Unity. And the power we have when were together.

FTS: Describe your sound in 5 words.

Road Waves: Groovy. Adventurous. Risky. Conversational. Melodic.

FTS: Who would you say are the biggest musical influences that have directly impacted the music you make?

Road Waves: The Grateful Dead and Phish have been our biggest influence in terms of playing a different set list every night, improvising a large portion of our shows, and connecting different songs into each other on any given night. Artists like Miles Davis, Allen Toussaint, and Frank Zappa are huge influences as far as composition goes. And I always have to give a shout out to Derek Trucks. Just because.

FTS: If you could play any venue, with any other band on the bill, where and who would you choose?

Road Waves: Red Rocks in Colorado and can I say Road Waves? Hahaha our magic shines when we have 3 hours to explore. But hypothetically I’d pick Phish.

FTS: What’s next for you guys?

Road Waves: Our formula is basically tour, tour, tour. We’re going to cross this country again a couple times in 2020 and get a USA tour going for the first time. Stoked on our Pi day party at Warehouse (03.14.2020). Also we’re going to drop some more singles this year in anticipation of an album hopefully by 2021 if everything goes right.
